Grilled Shrimp & Alterac Swiss Sammich

There are always times when you're tired of having the same 'ol, same 'ol and you want something different and tasty! At these times I take a good hard look at my pantry and try to think of ways to combine ingredients that I would never have thought to combine before. But well...It's like trying a new shot rotation. Sometimes, you'll increase your DPS tremendously and that poor target dummy won't know what hit him. And other times the target dummy laughs at you for not following the rotation laid out by elitist jerks.

It's the same when you're making up a recipe. Sometimes you'll get a nasty, pasty, too-salty/greasy mess. Then you end up ordering pizza as your Plan B. Other times though, you get a super delicious, sinfully gooey, absolutely scrumptious meal like this one.

This is a classic grilled cheese sammich with a twist that kicks up the flavor a notch. Instead of cheddar with maybe some ham or turkey, I've used some swiss cheese and shrimp. Yes, shrimp! Swiss cheese has a very distinct, slightly sharp flavor that tells you this ain't any ordinary sammich. It pairs beautifully with the shrimp which is just slightly salty and gives an excellent texture to contrast with the smooth and gooey swiss. Grilled cheese is a great lunch, a good dinner, and when you cut them up into fourths they're perfect for parties!

Grilled Shrimp & Alterac Swiss Sammich
4 Servings | Total Time: 10 Minutes | Apprentice

Mats
  • 1 tsp Olive Oil
  • 2 tsp Garlic Salt
  • 1/2 lb Shrimp, peeled, deveined, tails off (size is your choice, smaller is recommended)
  • 8 slices of Swiss Cheese
  • 8 slices of Wheat or Rye Bread
  • 8 tsp Butter
Craft: Pour oil into a small saucepan over medium heat. Add shrimp and garlic salt and cook until the shrimp is done and no longer transparent. Remove from heat, divide into four equal portions and set aside. Place a medium sized pan w/lid over medium-low heat. Spread 2 tsps of butter onto 2 slices of bread. Place one slice in the pan, butter side down. Quickly add 1 slice of swiss cheese, 1/4 of the cooked shrimp, another slice of cheese and then top with the second slice of bread, butter side up. Cover the pan with a lid and let cook for 1-2 minutes. It's time to flip the sammich when the down side is golden brown. If it takes longer than 2 minutes for it to get brown, turn up the heat a little. Cook for 1-2 minutes on the other side then remove from heat, slice and repeat for other sammiches

Strategies: You can add a little heat to this recipe if you'd like by cooking the shrimp with a dash of paprika and hot sauce. Also, be sure to serve these sammiches immediately because shrimp cools very quickly and no one likes a cold sammich. You can help keep the sammiches warm while you cook the others by putting them on a warm plate in the microwave or covering them with foil.

LFM: Nearly any sort of veggie pairs well with this grilled cheese but most especially peas, salad or simple tomato soup. You can also use spaghetti sauce, marinara sauce, or cocktail sauce to dip the sammich in.

Cost*:
  • Shrimp | $5.00
  • Swiss Cheese | $2.50
  • Wheat Bread | $1.00
Total Cost: $8.50
Cost Per Serving: $2.13
